Isla Mujeres, Mexico is one of those places where the ocean feels almost unreal — clear turquoise water, soft white sand, palm trees, and little treasures hidden along the shoreline. For anyone who loves beachcombing, it’s the kind of island that makes you slow down, look closely, and wonder what the Caribbean Sea might leave behind.
At Britt’s Beach, so much of my inspiration begins with moments like this: walking the shoreline, noticing the colors, textures, and shapes created by nature, and feeling connected to the ocean in a deeper way.
Shelling on Isla Mujeres is less about filling a bag and more about discovering the natural beauty of the coastline. Depending on the beach, tide, and weather, you may spot small shells, worn coral pieces, sea fans, sea glass, and tiny ocean treasures scattered along the tide line.
Some shells and coastal finds you may see include small conchs, auger shells, olive shells, coquinas, moon snail shells, cowries, dove shells, coral fragments, and naturally tumbled sea glass.
Every beach walk is different. Some days the sand looks untouched, and other days the tide leaves behind a beautiful trail of shells and sea-worn pieces.
The best time to look for shells is usually during low tide, especially early in the morning. When the tide pulls back, it can reveal shells and sea glass that were hidden underwater or buried beneath the sand.
Early morning low tide is especially ideal because fewer people have walked the beach, the sun is softer, and overnight wave action may have brought in new finds.
A good tip is to walk slowly along the wrack line, where seaweed, small shells, coral bits, and ocean debris naturally collect. This is often where the smallest and most interesting treasures are found.
After strong winds or a storm, the beach can change completely. Storms stir up the ocean floor and can bring in shells, coral fragments, sea glass, and other pieces that are not normally visible.
The day after rough weather can be one of the best times to walk the shoreline — but only when conditions are safe. Avoid strong surf, sharp debris, and unstable weather. The ocean is powerful, and safety always comes first.
While shelling on Isla Mujeres is beautiful, conservation in Mexico is very important. Shells are not just souvenirs. They are part of the coastal ecosystem.
Empty shells provide homes for hermit crabs, protect small marine life, help stabilize beaches, and eventually break down into sand. Coral and conch shells are especially important to leave behind.
Because of this, the best practice is to look, photograph, and leave shells where you found them. Many shells, coral pieces, conchs, and marine items may be protected, restricted, or confiscated when traveling. Even if something looks empty, it may still play an important role in the environment.
A good rule for visiting Isla Mujeres is:
Take photos, not shells.
The most meaningful beachcombing memories are often the ones you leave behind — a photo, a story, and a deeper respect for the ocean.
Bring a phone or camera for photos, reef-safe sunscreen, water, a hat, and a small bag for trash you may find along the way. Picking up plastic or litter is one of the best ways to give back to the beach while you explore.
Instead of collecting shells, try photographing your favorite finds in natural light. Close-up photos of shells in the sand can become beautiful memories, inspiration for jewelry, or even artwork for your home.
For me, shelling is about more than finding something pretty. It is about slowing down, noticing what the tide reveals, and appreciating the ocean’s artistry.
Isla Mujeres is a reminder that the beach gives us inspiration, but it also deserves protection. Every shell, every piece of sea glass, and every coral fragment has a place in the natural world.
At Britt’s Beach, my jewelry is inspired by these coastal moments — the colors of Caribbean water, the softness of sea-worn textures, and the feeling of carrying the beach with you wherever you go.
Shelling on Isla Mujeres is magical because it invites you to look closer. Walk during low tide, explore after storms when it is safe, and let the shoreline surprise you.
But most importantly, leave the island as beautiful as you found it.
Take the photo. Keep the memory. Let the ocean keep its treasures.

There’s something magical about celebrating the Fourth of July on Florida’s Emerald Coast. The sugar-white sand, the emerald-green water, the salty breeze, and fireworks reflecting across the Gulf create memories that last a lifetime. At Britt's Beach, these moments inspire every piece we create—capturing the beauty of the ocean and turning it into timeless jewelry you can wear year-round.
This Independence Day, one piece held a special place in my heart: my vintage blue Maireener shell necklace. Its shimmering blues echo the colors of the Gulf on a sunny July afternoon, while its natural iridescence catches the golden light just before sunset. Wearing it while walking the shoreline felt like carrying a little piece of the sea with me, a reminder that the ocean's beauty never fades.
The Emerald Coast is more than a destination—it's a feeling. Early morning beach walks, collecting seashells with coffee in hand, watching dolphins offshore, and ending the day beneath brilliant fireworks over the water. These are the moments that inspired Britt's Beach and continue to influence every new collection.
Known for their stunning natural iridescence, Maireener shells display shades of deep blue, turquoise, violet, and silver that resemble sunlight dancing beneath clear tropical water. Each shell is completely unique, making every necklace a one-of-a-kind treasure crafted by nature.
Whether you're dressing for a beach vacation, a summer concert, or simply bringing coastal style into your everyday wardrobe, a Maireener shell necklace adds effortless elegance while celebrating the beauty of the sea.
One of my favorite Fourth of July traditions isn't just watching fireworks—it's heading out at sunrise the following morning to beachcomb. After the tides shift, the shoreline often reveals incredible new treasures waiting to be discovered.
That same passion for searching the shoreline is what inspires our newest collection.
Our latest Beachcombing Collection celebrates the excitement of finding something extraordinary hidden among the waves. Every piece reflects the quiet joy of early mornings on the beach, the thrill of discovering a beautiful shell, and the stories each treasure carries with it.
