Shelling in Navarre Beach, Florida: A Beachcomber's Guide to One of the Emerald Coast's Best Hidden Gems

By Britt's Beach

There's something magical about the quiet shores of Navarre Beach, Florida. While many visitors come for its sugar-white sand and emerald-green water, experienced beachcombers know that Navarre is also one of the Emerald Coast's best-kept shelling secrets.

With miles of undeveloped shoreline, numerous public beach accesses, and fewer crowds than neighboring destinations, Navarre Beach offers countless opportunities to discover beautiful Gulf Coast seashells—especially after storms, winter cold fronts, or nearby beach renourishment projects.

Whether you're a first-time shell hunter or an experienced collector, here's everything you need to know before heading out.

Why Navarre Beach Is Great for Shelling

Located on Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and Fort Walton Beach, Navarre Beach has miles of natural coastline where waves constantly deliver new treasures from the Gulf of Mexico.

One advantage is the many numbered and lettered public beach accesses stretching along Gulf Boulevard. These accesses make it easy to explore different sections of the beach throughout the day. If one area isn't producing shells, simply drive to another access and continue your search.

Many local shellers enjoy exploring several different access points during one trip because shell concentrations often vary depending on winds, tides, and recent wave action.

The Best Beach Accesses for Shelling

One of the biggest advantages of shelling Navarre Beach is the abundance of public access points.

Instead of staying in one location, try exploring the:

  • Numbered beach accesses 22B, 22C, 37A, 37B, 37C (spray painted on the roadway)
  • Less crowded stretches between access points

Some days one section of beach may have only a handful of shells, while another may be covered with fresh treasures delivered overnight.

Walking between multiple access points often produces the best results.

What Shells Can You Find?

Navarre Beach offers an impressive variety of Gulf Coast shells.

Keep an eye out for:

🐚 Lettered Olive Shells

🐚 Lightning Whelks

🐚 Florida Fighting Conchs

🐚 Scotch Bonnets (Florida's state shell)

🐚 Coquinas

🐚 Calico Scallops

🐚 Atlantic Cockles

🐚 Oyster Shells

🐚 Moon Snails

🐚 Augers

🐚 Jingle Shells

🐚 Sand Dollars (only collect if no longer living)

With patience—and a little luck—you may even discover rarer finds like Junonias after major storms.

The Best Time of Day to Go Shelling

Early mornings consistently offer the best shelling.

Arriving shortly after sunrise means:

  • Fewer footprints
  • Less competition from other shellers
  • Cooler temperatures
  • Better lighting for spotting shells
  • Overnight tides may have delivered fresh treasures

Many experienced beachcombers also return during the last hour before sunset when crowds begin to disappear and the softer light makes colorful shells easier to see.

Low Tide Is Your Friend

Whenever possible, plan your trip around low tide.

As the water recedes, it exposes fresh shell lines and reveals areas that were underwater just hours earlier.

Pay special attention to:

  • Wrack lines (seaweed and shell deposits)
  • Small sandbars
  • Cuts in the beach
  • Gentle slopes where waves naturally deposit shells

Don't Overlook the Beach Accesses After Storms

Cold fronts, tropical systems, and strong onshore winds can dramatically improve shelling.

Even relatively small storms churn the Gulf floor and wash shells onto the beach.

The day after rough surf is often one of the best opportunities to find larger, freshly polished specimens.

Beach Renourishment Can Bring New Shells

Beach renourishment projects sometimes uncover shells that have been buried offshore for years.

Recently, Pensacola Beach completed a major beach renourishment project, restoring more than eight miles of shoreline with approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of sand. Large restoration projects like this can expose shells from offshore deposits, occasionally creating excellent shelling opportunities as waves redistribute the newly placed sand.

Likewise, Navarre Beach underwent its own restoration project, completed in early 2025, which many local shellers reported brought an abundance of shells to the shoreline during and after construction.

While shelling conditions always depend on tides, winds, and wave action, beach restoration projects can create exciting opportunities for beachcombers.

Shell Responsibly

The best beachcombers help protect the beaches they love.

Remember to:

  • Only collect empty shells.
  • Leave living shells and marine animals where you found them.
  • Return live sand dollars and starfish to the water.
  • Carry out any trash you find.
  • Respect dunes and protected nesting areas.

Responsible shelling helps preserve Navarre Beach for future generations.

Britt's Beach Tip

One of my favorite ways to shell Navarre Beach is to start just after sunrise and explore several different numbered and lettered beach accesses before the crowds arrive. Every access has its own personality, and you never know which one will reward you with a beautiful Lettered Olive, Lightning Whelk, or Florida Fighting Conch.

Sometimes the best treasures aren't found by walking farther—they're found by exploring one more beach access.

Every Shell Has a Story

Whether you're searching for your very first shell or adding another treasure to your growing collection, Navarre Beach reminds us that every tide brings a new opportunity for discovery.

Slow down, enjoy the search, and remember—sometimes the best treasure isn't the rarest shell you find, but the memories you make while looking for it.

Happy shelling! 🐚🌊
