When most people search for shell jewelry or beach jewelry, they're often looking for something beautiful to remind them of the ocean. But every once in a while, a shell carries a story far deeper than its shimmering surface.
Among the world's most treasured seashells is the Maireener shell, also known as the Rainbow Kelp Shell. Tiny in size yet extraordinary in beauty, these iridescent shells have captivated collectors, artists, and ocean lovers for centuries. Their brilliant flashes of blue, green, pink, and gold make them unlike almost any other shell found in nature.
At Britt's Beach, we're inspired by the stories the ocean leaves behind and are excited to offer a few vintage Maireener Shell necklace from Tasmania. These vintage shells date back to the Victorian Era and are extremely delicate and special. Britt's Beach Maireener Shell Necklaces have been restrung to provide strength. Maireener shells are small marine gastropods found exclusively in the coastal waters surrounding Tasmania, Australia. They naturally grow attached to kelp forests, where the cool, nutrient-rich waters allow them to develop their unmistakable iridescent finish.
Their shimmering appearance is not painted or polished—it's created naturally by layers of nacre that reflect light much like opal or mother-of-pearl.
Because they only thrive in specific marine environments, Maireener shells are considered one of Australia's most distinctive natural treasures.
Long before Maireener shells became admired around the world, they held profound cultural importance for Tasmanian Aboriginal women.
Shell-stringing is recognized as Tasmania's oldest continuing cultural tradition, with archaeological discoveries of pierced shells dating back approximately 2,000–2,600 years. The tradition has been passed from mother to daughter for countless generations and continues today as an important expression of cultural identity.
Creating these necklaces is an incredibly time-consuming process.
Each shell is individually collected by hand during seasonal tides, carefully cleaned, naturally prepared, pierced one by one, and meticulously threaded into intricate patterns. Historically, natural fibers and sinew were used before later generations incorporated cotton thread and fine needles.
Although Maireener shell necklaces are admired for their beauty, they have always represented much more than adornment.
Historically they served as:
Today, authentic Maireener shell necklaces are displayed in museums and galleries throughout Australia and Europe, where they are recognized as both cultural treasures and remarkable works of art.
Like many marine species, Maireener shells face environmental pressures.
Changes in kelp forests, warming ocean temperatures, stronger storms, and habitat disturbance have reduced the availability of healthy shell populations in some traditional gathering areas. Tasmanian Aboriginal artists continue to emphasize sustainable harvesting, collecting only what nature can replenish to help protect future generations of shells and the traditions connected to them.
Their story serves as an important reminder that the oceans we love require thoughtful stewardship.
