🐚 SHELL ENCYCLOPEDIA #18: FLORIDA CERITH

Florida Cerith
Cerithium atratum
(also historically listed as Cerithium floridanum)

Sometimes the smallest shells hold some of the best details.

The Florida Cerith is a slender, beautifully sculpted gastropod found along Florida’s coast. Its tall pointed spire is covered in rows of tiny beads, ridges and knobs—almost as if someone carved every detail by hand.

🔎 IDENTIFY
Look for a narrow, gradually tapering shell with a pointed tip and heavily textured spiral rows. Florida shell guides generally place these little shells around 1–2 inches long, with colors ranging through muted gray, brown and cream.

🌊 APPRECIATE
Ceriths may be small, but they have a job to do. They move along the seafloor grazing on algae and organic material. They’re one of those easily overlooked creatures quietly participating in the life of Florida’s shallow coastal waters.

🤍 PROTECT
That beautiful shell may still have an owner! Always check carefully before collecting. If a snail is living inside, leave it exactly where you found it and enjoy the discovery without taking it home.

✨ SHELL SEEKER TIP:
Don’t overlook the tiny shells mixed into the wrack line and shell piles. Slow down, look closely, and you may notice the Florida Cerith’s intricate little spire hiding among much larger treasures.
